Computer based training (CBT) or eLearning, is quickly becoming a very important part of many businesses' software collection. These helpful applications assist employers to quickly, effectively and efficiently train and test new as well as existing employees on a wide variety of topics. These applications can be delivered over the internet, and are referred to as web-based-training (WBT). WBT systems are available in several different varieties. Canned systems, or a system that is programmed and sold for a fairly low fee, is the most predominant option. These systems are often incapable of being expanded with data entry capabilities. This presents a real disadvantage since they often don't do some of the things that you would like, or even do too much. Systems that do too much, have too many options making it hard for employees to learn and use the software.

Training software should provide an easy to use framework for providing and tracking employee training, skills and certifications.

WBT applications can be easily configured and modified, giving each buyer the ability to configure to their own specifications. These applications would be helpful within many areas such as job training, safety training, ISO training and OSHA. Browser-based computer training can highly automate training efforts, and even generate automatic reports. Although configurable web based training systems are relatively new in the market place they are sort of like an open source system. Owners are allowed to modify the structure of the application in order to accommodate business needs within the company.

Due to the labor intensiveness of traditional training methods compared to the computer based model, computer training offers high return on investment. It automates much of the needed tracking as well. This newer method of training will continue to grow. More and more vendors are offering computer training system software, especially web-based solutions.
